How we test product analytics

Product analytics tools record what people do in your product, such as sign-ups, clicks and purchases, and turn those events into funnels, retention charts and cohorts. Most now bundle session replay and feature flags as well. The differences that matter before you sign up are on paper: how much is free, what 10 million events cost, how long data is kept, and what the vendor commits to on security.

We compare them on the same six indicators, read from each vendor's pricing, security and documentation pages:

  • Pricing clarity: whether every self-serve volume is priced as text, and where sales takes over.
  • Free tier: how many events a month you can send for free.
  • Price at 10M events: the monthly cost of 10 million identified events on monthly billing.
  • Data retention: how long the free and entry paid plans keep your events.
  • Compliance and data residency: the vendor's own SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, EU data storage, a HIPAA BAA.
  • Data control: warehouse export, raw export on the free plan, open source, SAML SSO.

Each review says which pages it was written from and when. Where we have run a product hands-on, the evidence is on its page.
