How we test error monitoring

Error monitoring tools collect exceptions from your apps, group them into issues and alert you. They differ less in what they catch than in how they bill: by error events, by product and host, or by data ingested and users.

We compare them on the same six indicators, read from each vendor's pricing, security and documentation pages:

  • Pricing clarity: whether every self-serve volume is priced, and how many billing units you must estimate.
  • Free tier: whether a permanent free plan includes error monitoring, its allowance and how many people can use it.
  • Price for 5 users and 100,000 errors: the lowest listed monthly cost at one stated scenario, with the assumption named where a vendor does not bill by errors.
  • Error retention: how long the entry paid plan keeps error events.
  • Compliance and data residency: the vendor's own SOC 2 Type II report, ISO 27001, a HIPAA BAA, an EU data region.
  • Team and control: SAML SSO, how users are priced, and a self-hosted option.

Because the billing models differ, prices are compared at one reference scenario and the arithmetic is shown. Each review says which pages it was written from and when. Where we have run a product hands-on, the evidence is on its page.
