Render review
by RenderFrontend and app hosting
Web services, static sites and managed Postgres on one bill: unlimited seats on the $25 Pro plan, compute per instance, and SOC 2 and ISO 27001 documents from Pro.
- Free plan
- Self-serve
- Seat + usage
- Public prices
What you're paying for
- Saves engineering time (main value)
- Compliance included
- Worth the price
Managed web services, Postgres and Key Value behind one workspace plan, with unlimited seats and audit logs from the $25 Pro plan.
Render replaces the servers, databases and deploy pipeline a small team would otherwise run: services deploy from Git or Docker with zero-downtime deploys, and Postgres and Key Value are managed. Pro, at $25 a month plus compute, has no seat charge, workspace audit logs and 14-day log retention, and Pro workspaces can view the SOC 2 Type 2 report and ISO 27001 certificate under NDA. Scale ($499) adds SAML SSO, 1 TB of bandwidth and a HIPAA BAA.
- Services and databases on one billWeb services, workers, cron jobs, managed Postgres and Key Value are priced per instance on the same pricing page, prorated by the second.Evidence: Pricing page and billing FAQ (2026-10-15)
- Audit logs and reports on ProPro workspaces can export audit logs (at least the last 90 days are kept) and view the SOC 2 Type 2 report and ISO 27001 certificate after signing an NDA.Evidence: Audit logs and compliance docs (2026-10-15)
- Unlimited seats on ProPro includes unlimited team seats and services for $25 a month; you pay for the instances you run, not for each developer.Evidence: Pricing page and plan features docs (2026-10-15)
- Best for
- Small teams that want app servers, Postgres and background jobs managed in one place, with no per-developer charge.
- Good to know
- Bandwidth beyond the plan allowance is $0.15 per GB, and SAML SSO and the HIPAA BAA start on the $499 Scale plan.

| Bottom line | From its public pages, Render suits teams that want services and databases managed together, with no seat charges and audit logs on Pro. Bandwidth is the cost to watch: 1 TB a month adds $146.25 on Pro. | From its public pages, Cloudflare Workers costs the least here by a wide margin for traffic-heavy apps, with SSO and audit logs on every plan. Plan for budget alerts that notify rather than stop, and an adapter for Next.js. | From its public pages, Netlify suits teams with modest traffic: unlimited members on Pro, a free plan you may use commercially and spending that stops by default. Bandwidth is billed in credits, so data-heavy apps cost more here than on the other two. | From its public pages, Vercel is the compliance and Next.js choice here: SOC 2, ISO 27001 and a BAA on Pro, and zero-configuration Next.js. It scores lower on this rubric because every developer is a seat, Hobby is non-commercial and Pro keeps runtime logs for 1 day. |

Review
Review from public pages
Written from Render's public pages (pricing, security or privacy, and docs) as read on Oct 15, 2026. We did not sign up, and no hands-on run is published yet.
What the public pages show
We read Render's pricing page, its billing FAQ and its docs on free instances, plan features, outbound bandwidth, the build pipeline, logging, log streams, audit logs, team roles, SAML SSO, compliance and HIPAA on Oct 15, 2026; we did not sign up for this review. Render bills three things: a workspace plan (Hobby $0, Pro $25, Scale $499 a month, Enterprise by quote), compute for each instance, prorated by the second, and metered usage such as outbound bandwidth and build pipeline minutes beyond the plan's allowance.
The free offer is narrower than the Hobby plan's $0 suggests. Free instances exist for web services, Postgres and Key Value, but the docs say not to use them for production: free web services spin down after 15 minutes without traffic, and free Postgres databases expire after 30 days. Hobby workspaces have one member, and without a payment method Render suspends services rather than billing overage.
Spend control is partial: you can set a monthly spend limit for build pipeline minutes, and Render emails you as you approach usage limits, but the pages describe no cap for bandwidth once a card is on file.
Strengths
- No seat charge from Pro
Pro includes unlimited team seats and services for $25 a month; compute is billed per instance whoever deploys.
vs Vercel: Vercel charges $20 a month for each additional developer seat.
- Compliance documents on Pro
Pro workspaces can view the SOC 2 Type 2 report and ISO 27001 certificate in the dashboard after signing an NDA; Scale adds a HIPAA BAA signed from workspace settings.
Compared: Netlify offers SOC 2 audit reports and HIPAA to Enterprise customers.
- Logs and audit trail on Pro
Pro keeps logs 14 days, adds HTTP request logs and keeps workspace audit logs at least 90 days; log streams forward logs on every plan.
vs Vercel: Vercel keeps runtime logs 1 day on Pro and lists audit logs on Enterprise.
- Databases on the same platform
Managed Postgres with point-in-time recovery and Redis-compatible Key Value are priced on the same page, from $6 and $10 a month.
Things to know
- Bandwidth is metered
Pro includes 25 GB of outbound bandwidth a month; beyond that each GB is $0.15, so 1 TB adds $146.25.
Workaround: Scale includes 1 TB a month, at $499.
- SSO and HIPAA on Scale
SAML SSO, SCIM, the Viewer and Billing roles and HIPAA-enabled workspaces need Scale at $499 a month; a HIPAA-enabled workspace adds 20% to all usage.
- Spend limit covers builds only
A monthly spend limit can stop build pipeline minutes; for bandwidth the pages describe email notices but no cap once a card is on file.
- Free instances are for trials
Free web services spin down after 15 minutes without traffic, free Postgres databases expire after 30 days, and Hobby workspaces have one member.
Pricing reality
Render bills a workspace plan plus compute and metered usage. Hobby is $0, Pro $25 and Scale $499 a month; compute is per instance, from $7 a month for a 0.5-CPU, 512 MB web service and $6 for the smallest paid Postgres. Pro includes 25 GB of bandwidth and 1,000 build minutes; beyond that, $0.15 per GB and $5 per 1,000 minutes. Extra custom domains are $0.25 each.
For our scenario we compute $178.25 a month: Pro $25, one $7 instance for the server code, a free static site for static assets, and 975 GB of bandwidth over the allowance at $0.15 ($146.25). Scale would be $506 with 1 TB included. Premium support is an add-on on Pro and Scale.
Exit path
Render deploys from Git with native runtimes or from Docker images, so the application itself is portable. Blueprints (render.yaml) are Render-specific infrastructure as code, and paid Postgres instances support logical backups you can export.
Compared with
- Pick Render when
- You want a free tier to try things, and audit logs and 14-day log retention on the $25 Pro plan.
- Pick Heroku when
- Your app moves a lot of data: Heroku does not bill data transfer, and one $7 Basic dyno covers our scenario.
- Pick Render when
- Several developers deploy and you want no seat charges, 14-day logs and audit logs on the entry paid plan.
- Pick Vercel when
- You build with Next.js, or want fixed-price CDN tiers: Vercel covers our 1 TB scenario for $80.
Choose it if
- Your team wants app servers, workers and Postgres managed in one place.
- Several people deploy and you do not want seat charges.
- You need audit logs and SOC 2 reports without an enterprise contract.
Look elsewhere if
- Your app serves terabytes of data a month and you do not need Scale.
- You need SAML SSO for less than $499 a month.
Bottom line
From its public pages, Render suits teams that want services and databases managed together, with no seat charges and audit logs on Pro. Bandwidth is the cost to watch: 1 TB a month adds $146.25 on Pro.
