How we test frontend and app hosting

Frontend and app hosting platforms build your site or web app from Git, serve it from a global network and run its server code. They differ less in what they deploy than in how they bill: per developer seat plus metered usage, in credits, or by requests and CPU time.

We compare them on the same six indicators, read from each vendor's pricing, security and documentation pages:

  • Pricing clarity and spend control: how many usage meters you must estimate, whether prices vary by region, and whether usage can be stopped at a set amount.
  • Free tier: whether a permanent free plan exists, whether it may be used commercially, whether it stops at its limits, and how many people can deploy on it.
  • Price for 3 developers, 10M requests and 1 TB: the lowest listed monthly cost at one stated scenario, with every assumption named.
  • Compliance documents: the vendor's own SOC 2 Type II report, ISO 27001, who can get the reports, and a HIPAA BAA.
  • Team seats and SSO: whether people who deploy are charged per seat, where SAML SSO sits, and free read-only access.
  • Logs and audit trail: how long runtime logs are kept on the entry paid plan, whether they can be exported, and audit logs.

Because the billing models differ, prices are compared at one reference scenario and the arithmetic is shown. Each review says which pages it was written from and when. Where we have run a product hands-on, the evidence is on its page.
