How we test managed Postgres

Managed Postgres services run the database for you: compute, storage, backups and upgrades. They differ less in the Postgres they run than in how they bill: a plan fee plus compute hours, compute billed only while it runs, or a monthly price per cluster size.

We compare them on the same six indicators, read from each vendor's pricing, security and documentation pages:

  • Pricing clarity: what a database bill is made of, what you must estimate, and whether any self-serve price is missing or stated two ways.
  • Free tier: whether a permanent free plan includes a database, its storage, and whether free projects are paused.
  • Price for a 10 GB app with staging: the lowest listed monthly cost at one stated scenario, with the assumptions named.
  • Backups and point-in-time recovery: how far back the entry paid plan can restore without a flat add-on, and which backups are included.
  • Compliance and data residency: the vendor's own SOC 2 Type II report, ISO 27001, a HIPAA BAA, an EU region, and the plan each one needs.
  • Team and control: SAML SSO, an audit log, branches that start with production data, and a self-hosted or own-cloud option.

Because the billing models differ, prices are compared at one reference scenario and the arithmetic is shown. Each review says which pages it was written from and when. Where we have run a product hands-on, the evidence is on its page.
