Zendesk vs Intercom vs Freshdesk: Freshdesk 6.7, Intercom 6.6, Zendesk 6.1; 5 agents cost $145 or $275
We read the pricing, trust, legal, help center and developer pages of three help desks on the same day and scored them on the same six indicators. What 5 agents with email, chat and a knowledge base cost, where SLAs, SSO and HIPAA sit, and who should pick which.
On this page9 sections
On six indicators read from each vendor's public pages, Freshdesk scores 6.7 out of 10, Intercom 6.6 and Zendesk 6.1. For our reference scenario, 5 agents on the cheapest plan that includes email ticketing, live chat and a public knowledge base, billed annually, Intercom Essential and Freshdesk Omni Growth both come to $145 a month and Zendesk Suite Team to $275. Freshdesk stands out for SAML SSO and EU hosting from its first plan; Intercom for the Fin AI agent in the same inbox and an activity log on its entry plan; Zendesk for breadth, with every channel, voice included, in one seat and a HIPAA BAA and data region on Suite Professional.
All three are in the Good band, and all three publish per-agent prices, month-to-month prices and a price for their AI agent. The scores measure what the public pages commit to, not how well each product works or how fast a team answers customers, and we did not sign up for any of them.

What the public pages show
Zendesk sells per-agent plans. Support Team ($19 on annual terms) is email ticketing only; Suite Team ($55) adds messaging and live chat, one help center, social channels and voice. Suite Professional ($115) adds SLA policies, CSAT surveys, up to five help centers, HIPAA and a choice of data region. Suite Enterprise, with custom roles and the audit log, is priced by sales.
Intercom puts its AI agent, Fin, in the same inbox as the team. Essential ($29 per seat on annual terms) includes live chat, ticketing, inbound email, a public Help Center, conversation ratings, activity logs and native phone, SMS and WhatsApp billed by usage. Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, with no charge when the customer asks for a person. Expert ($132) adds SAML SSO, custom roles, SLAs, multibrand and the HIPAA BAA.
Freshdesk comes in two editions. The email-first edition starts at $19 per agent, but live chat is only in Freshdesk Omni, which starts at $29 and brings email, web chat, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram into one inbox with a knowledge base. SAML SSO is on every plan, and the data center is chosen at sign-up.
Strengths and things to know
Zendesk. Strengths: every main channel, voice included, in one Suite Team seat; its own SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022 among a long list of certificates; HIPAA and data region on a plan bought online; SSO on every plan. Things to know: SLAs and CSAT start at $115 per agent; phone numbers and minutes are billed on top; file export is switched on by support and not on Team plans; the help center describes a Suite Growth plan and AI resolution tiers (since May 18, 2026) that the pricing page does not price.
Intercom. Strengths: a full help desk with phone on the entry plan; clear rules on when a Fin outcome is billed; activity logs on every plan; full conversation export to your own cloud storage. Things to know: SSO, SLAs and the HIPAA BAA need Expert; the bill combines seats with Fin outcomes and channel usage; EU hosting needs a contract and a new workspace; and the pricing page showed Essential at $19 to some visitors and $29 to others, while the help center lists $29.
Freshdesk. Strengths: SAML SSO on every plan; chat and social channels on the entry Omni plan; EU hosting chosen at sign-up; every plan priced in public, Enterprise included; a whole-account export. Things to know: CSAT, multiple SLAs and custom roles start on Pro; phone needs Freshcaller, a separate subscription; the HIPAA guide lists Enterprise plans, not the Omni line; and a few pages disagree on details such as PayPal.
Pricing reality
Reference scenario: 5 agents on the cheapest plan that includes email ticketing, live chat and a public knowledge base, billed annually, at US list prices before tax, without AI agent usage.
| Service | Plan | Monthly cost | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom | Essential | $145 | Computed: 5 × $29; live chat, email and the Help Center are on every plan |
| Freshdesk | Freshdesk Omni Growth | $145 | Computed: 5 × $29; the $19 Freshdesk Growth plan has no live chat |
| Zendesk | Suite Team | $275 | Computed: 5 × $55; the $19 Support Team plan has no chat or help center |
Month to month, the same seats cost $195 on Intercom, $175 on Freshdesk and $345 on Zendesk (computed). The plan you need moves the number more than the entry price. For SLA policies and CSAT surveys together, Zendesk needs Suite Professional ($575 a month for 5 agents) and Freshdesk needs Omni Pro ($395), while Intercom has ratings on Essential and SLAs on Expert ($660); all three figures are computed on annual terms.
AI agents are billed on top and counted differently: a Zendesk automated resolution, an Intercom outcome and a Freshdesk session are not the same unit. As an illustration only, 200 AI-handled conversations a month, each counted once, would cost $350 on Zendesk at the pay-as-you-go rate after the 25 included for 5 agents ($262.50 at the committed rate), $198 on Intercom, and $98 on Freshdesk once the 500 included sessions are used (our arithmetic).
How we scored them
Every product in this category is scored on the same six indicators, read from the vendor's own pricing, trust, legal, help center and developer pages, with fixed formulas. The overall score is the plain mean. Our methodology page explains how these scores work.
| Indicator | Zendesk | Intercom | Freshdesk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pricing clarity | 6 | 6 | 5 |
| Free plan and trial | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Price for 5 agents | 4.3 | 6.4 | 6.4 |
| Channels and service levels | 7.8 | 8.6 | 8.6 |
| Compliance and data residency | 8 | 7.3 | 9 |
| Admin, API and data export | 7.2 | 8 | 8.4 |
| Overall | 6.1 | 6.6 | 6.7 |
Pricing clarity loses a point for each price a page leaves out or each pair of pages that disagree: four gaps each for Zendesk and Intercom, five for Freshdesk. None has a permanent free plan, so all three score 3 there. Freshdesk's lead over Intercom comes from compliance: EU hosting chosen at sign-up and a HIPAA BAA on its Enterprise plan, bought online, while Intercom's EU hosting goes through sales. Zendesk's lower overall score comes mostly from the scenario price, because live chat starts on a $55 seat.
Also in this category
Front scores 6.3: a team shared inbox with SLAs, CSAT and SAML SSO on Professional and an audit log on every plan; email plus chat costs $325 a month for 5 seats (computed), because Starter connects one channel type. Help Scout scores 6.2: the lowest 5-agent price here at $125 a month on Standard (computed), with SLAs, CSAT and a free plan for up to 5 users, while phone runs through integrations and data is hosted in the US only.
Who should choose which
- Choose Freshdesk if you want email, chat, WhatsApp and social messages in one inbox at $29 per agent, with SAML SSO and EU hosting from the first plan. Look elsewhere if you need CSAT surveys at the entry price or phone inside the same subscription.
- Choose Intercom if you want an AI agent to answer first and your team to take over in the same inbox, with phone on the entry plan. Look elsewhere if you need SSO, SLAs or a HIPAA BAA below the Expert plan.
- Choose Zendesk if you want every channel, voice included, under one seat and a HIPAA BAA and data region on Suite Professional, bought online. Look elsewhere if you need SLAs and CSAT at the Suite Team price.
Bottom line
From public pages alone, Freshdesk edges out Intercom, 6.7 to 6.6: both cost $145 a month for 5 agents in our scenario, Freshdesk with SSO and EU hosting on the entry plan, Intercom with phone, the Fin AI agent and activity logs there. Zendesk costs more to start but puts every channel, voice included, in one seat, with HIPAA and a data region on Suite Professional. For all three, compare the plan that has the SLAs, CSAT, SSO or HIPAA you need, not the entry price.
How we checked
We read the vendors' pricing pages and plan tables, trust and security pages, legal terms, help center articles and developer docs on Oct 15, 2026. Zendesk's pricing page redirects to its Korean site from our location, so we read the US English page with the redirect turned off and compared it with the Internet Archive copy of Oct 12, 2026; Freshworks' trust center did not load, so we used its Internet Archive copy of Oct 1, 2026. We did not sign up, start a trial or call an API. Facts the pages did not state, such as the prices of Zendesk's AI resolution tiers, are left out rather than guessed. Every figure is on the vendors' pages as of that date or, where marked, computed from them.
