Merchant of record for digital products with storefront, license keys and email marketing; Stripe-owned, with its team now building Stripe Managed Payments.
A merchant of record with a storefront, license keys and email marketing built in, so you can sell digital products globally without registering for tax.
Lemon Squeezy sells on your behalf as merchant of record: it takes on tax collection and calculation liability, files and pays the tax, and handles billing support. Around checkout and subscriptions it includes a storefront, license keys, secure downloads, discount codes, affiliates and email marketing (free up to 500 subscribers). In our scenario its fees come to $680 a month. Its 2026 update says the team is focused on Stripe Managed Payments, and that support responses have been slower and product updates less frequent.

Bottom line
From its public pages, Lemon Squeezy bundles merchant-of-record tax handling with digital-product tools. Its lower score reflects surcharges listed only in the docs, USD-only charges and simple team controls, and its team now points sellers to Stripe Managed Payments.
From its public pages, Stripe has the lowest fees in our scenario and the strongest controls and exit path here. Tax registration and filing stay with you unless you pay for Tax Complete or Managed Payments.
From its public pages, Braintree has the lowest fees in our scenario and strong access controls and exit terms. It leaves tax entirely to you and takes an application before you go live.
From its public pages, Paddle is the most complete merchant of record here for a SaaS business: tax filing, buyer support and security reports in one 5% + 50¢ fee. Plan around monthly payouts and the $20 chargeback fee.

Review
Review from public pages
Written from Lemon Squeezy's public pages (pricing, security or privacy, and docs) as read on Oct 15, 2026. We did not sign up, and no hands-on run is published yet.
What the public pages show
We read Lemon Squeezy's pricing page, its help docs on fees, payouts, currencies, store activation, teams, chargebacks and exports, its DPA and its January 2026 blog update on Oct 15, 2026; we did not sign up for this review. The pricing page lists 5% + 50¢ per transaction and notes that some payments may be subject to additional fees. The fee docs list them: +1.5% for transactions outside the US, +1.5% for PayPal, +0.5% for subscription payments, payout fees outside the US, and marketing fees on abandoned-cart recoveries (+5%) and affiliate referrals (+3%).
Two figures differ within the pricing page: 16 or up to 21 payment methods, and 95 or 130+ currencies. The currency docs settle the second: prices can be shown in 130 currencies, but every charge is processed in USD.
A banner across the main site links to a January 28, 2026 post by co-founder JR Farr. It says Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024, that the team has been building Stripe Managed Payments, that this meant slower support responses and less frequent product updates, and that the goal is an easy migration for Lemon Squeezy users. It does not say whether new stores are still accepted; the site still offers sign-up and the docs describe store activation. The site footer and DPA name the seller as Link, LLC, formerly Lemon Squeezy LLC.
Strengths
Tax filing included
As merchant of record, Lemon Squeezy collects, files and pays sales tax and VAT on your behalf.
vs Stripe: Stripe leaves filing to you unless you add Tax Complete or Managed Payments.
Built for digital products
License keys, secure downloads, a storefront, lead magnets, pay-what-you-want pricing and email marketing come in the same account.
No card to start
Sign-up and test mode need no card, and the pricing page says every feature is included.
Payouts twice a month
Bank or PayPal payouts are created twice a month, free to US bank accounts via Stripe, with a $50 minimum.
vs Paddle: Paddle pays out once a month, from $100.
Things to know
Product direction is moving to Stripe
The January 2026 update says the team is building Stripe Managed Payments and aims to help Lemon Squeezy users migrate; it gives no timeline and does not say how long stores stay on Lemon Squeezy.
Workaround: Stripe lists Managed Payments at 3.5% on top of Stripe payment fees.
Surcharges sit in the docs
The pricing page shows 5% + 50¢; the fee docs add 1.5% for non-US and PayPal payments and 0.5% for subscriptions, which take our scenario from $600 to $680.
Every charge is in USD
Prices can be displayed in 130 currencies, but customers are charged the USD equivalent, and payouts are made in USD (bank payouts can be converted).
Simple team access
Teams have owners and members; members can use everything except team, billing, plans and payout settings. We found no SSO or audit log.
Pricing reality
Lemon Squeezy charges 5% + 50¢ per transaction, on the total order value, with no monthly fee. The fee docs add 1.5% for transactions outside the US, 1.5% for PayPal, 0.5% for subscription payments, a $15 dispute fee, 1% on payouts to non-US bank accounts (via Stripe) or $0.50 to 3% capped at $30 via PayPal, 5% on revenue recovered by abandoned-cart emails and 3% on affiliate referrals. Email marketing is free up to 500 subscribers.
For our scenario: 200 × $3.00 = $600, plus 0.5% on $10,000 ($50) and 1.5% on the $2,000 of EU charges ($30): $680 a month, 6.8% of volume.
Exit path
Orders export to CSV from the dashboard, email subscribers can be exported, and the API lists customers, orders and subscriptions. The pages we read do not describe moving saved cards to another processor; the 2026 update says the goal is an easy migration to Stripe Managed Payments.
You sell digital downloads or courses and want selling and marketing tools in the same account, with payouts twice a month.
Pick Paddle when
You sell SaaS and want one fee without surcharges, SOC 2 Type II on file, charges in 33 currencies and role-based access.
Choose it if
You sell digital products and want license keys, downloads and a storefront included.
You want tax filing handled and can accept charges in USD.
You plan to follow Lemon Squeezy to Stripe Managed Payments.
Look elsewhere if
You would rather not plan a later move: Lemon Squeezy says its focus is Stripe Managed Payments.
You need SSO, granular roles or charges in local currencies.
Bottom line
From its public pages, Lemon Squeezy bundles merchant-of-record tax handling with digital-product tools. Its lower score reflects surcharges listed only in the docs, USD-only charges and simple team controls, and its team now points sellers to Stripe Managed Payments.
